Planning a destination vow renewal is not something to leave to the last second!  It requires a detailed vision and meticulous planning, so check out a few tips to get you started:

Start Early

Start planning early so you can send save-the-dates, find a fantastic group rate on rooms and flights if needed, get answers to all questions, and otherwise maximize chances of having everything you want!

Take Advantage of the Resort’s Wedding Planner

Take total advantage of the resort’s wedding/vow renewal planner! Remember to be friendly and courteous, and essentially turn the person into your new bestie. Ask plenty of questions as well what suggestions and advice they have. Don’t forget to be specific about your requests so you get the ceremony you’ve been dreaming of.

Ensure an Alternate Indoor Venue

Be sure that the resort you’ve chosen has an alternate indoor venue in case rain or other bad weather. That is, unless you already want to have an indoor ceremony!

Get the Details. All the Details.

Get the full details on everything resort packages do and do not include, as well as prices on extras and service staff tips. Remember to read all contracts carefully before signing to avoid unhappy surprises on your final bill.

Think About it!

Spend some time thinking about what you want your ceremony to entail.  This isn’t a legal ceremony, so you don’t have to follow any particular “script.” Make it personal as you want by writing a detailed (or not) event “play by play.” Ask the resort coordinator for a copy of the ceremony they usually use to for inspiration if desired.

Make Photo Arrangements

Make arrangements for photos.  If want to use the resort photographer, ask to see their portfolio and package prices before making a decision. If a member of your party is a good amateur photographer, consider asking that person to be the official or backup photo-taker.

Ask for Samples from Resort Musicians

Thinking of hiring resort musicians or DJ? Ask for music clips and playlists to review before signing a contract.

Go for Simple, Comfortable Footwear

Opt for simple flats or sandals with your dress if doing the beach ceremony thing. Have your guy wear sandals with a light-colored suit or even casual slacks. Going barefoot is also an option if the sand isn’t too warm!

Send Favors Ahead of Time

Either pack favors or send them to the resort before the event date.  Go for non-edible, lightweight and useful favors, such as pashminas, tote bags, sun hats or inexpensive digital cameras.

Let Everyone Know You Don’t Expect Gifts

Gifts are not generally part of a vow renewal, so let guests know that you don’t expect them.

Meet With the Resort Officiant

If you can, have a meeting with the resort officiant before the ceremony to discuss what you want and what you plan to do.

Relax!

Remember to relax!  Provide your guests with the itinerary ahead of time, then leave it to them to be where they need to be at the right time. You certainly don’t have to play travel coordinator–give that job to someone else in your party. Your job? Relax and get married (again).

Schedule Private Time

Don’t forget to schedule some private “couple time” on the day of your ceremony and of course in the following days. After all, it’s your vow renewal, so quality time together is a must!
