How to DIY Your Wedding Venue

Pinterest

The venue for your wedding is one of the most important parts of the day, after the dress, of course. Doing it yourself is not cheap, nor is it easy, but it does mean that you have complete control over the way it looks. If you’re still looking to decorate it yourself, then take a look at our tips below.

The Venue

Trying to find a venue that offers a blank canvas can be challenging, especially if you’re not into the whole barn or yurt thing. Many venues will have a certain style already imposed upon them, which can make your colour scheme or ideas seem like a terrible idea.

However, there are websites out there designed to help you find a venue perfect for you, such as FindYourPerfectVenue.com. Alternatively, you could hire a pagoda structure and have a real DIY wedding.

Lighting

A simple and easy way of creating an ambiance with very little investment, the right lighting can transform any room into a place of romance or drama.

For a romantic look, you can do no wrong with festoon lighting. Traditional bulbs and gentle lighting is perfect for photos, for dinner and to add a vintage feel.

Fairy lights are ideal if your budget is smaller, and are really versatile. Whether you pop them in jam jars as centrepieces, hang them across the ceiling or drape them across the mantelpiece, they can make any venue beautiful.

If you’re looking for drama from your venue, then lighting will make all the difference. You’d be hard pressed to add much more drama than a flambeaux at the entrance of your venue.

For something fun – give your guests sparklers and ask them to head outside to write stuff in the air! Perfect for a winter wedding, too.

Bunting and Balloons

While bunting is still enjoying the last of its heyday, balloons are well and truly tacktastic. However, it does depend on how you do them.

Bunting is mainly for those vintage style or twee country weddings, and if you’re not feeling that vibe but you do love bunting, then try it in metallics. This elevates it from cutesy to classy.

Balloons on the other hand, need more work. They should be completely spherical, opaque and not pinned to the wall in threes. Take a look at these on Pinterest for more ideas.

Table Signs

A hand-drawn sign will add that little bit extra elegance. Whether you hire a professional illustrator or you have try outs with your friends to see which of them has the best handwriting, something handwritten or drawn will make your table centrepieces are that little bit softer and more inviting – especially for photos!
