widower remarrying - legal status of daughter
Hello. First of all, let me thank you for such a wonderful site. I wish I had discovered it sooner.
I am a widower of over three years with a daughter about to be seven years old. I am remarrying in about a month, and while there are challenges, they are nothing close to the excitement and love we have for each other.
My question is about the legal status of my daughter once we are remarried. Will my wife become my daughter's mother in the eyes of the law? Should she do an adoption?
My daughter was born in Florida, and we have lived the last five years in Texas if that is relevant.
Thanks!

Congratulations on finding love again.
While we're not legal experts, we believe that unless your new wife adopts your daughter she would not be her legal guardian.
You should probably seek legal counsel.
On a personal level, consider everyone's feelings before adoption, including those of your daughter and her mother's family. I know, first hand, that the family can be very sensitive if it appears that you are replacing your daughter's mom. If necessary, find a good family therapist to work through these issues.
Wishing you a happy and healthy stepfamily life...
