Vow renewal after 5 yrs to avoid inlaw conflict

My husband of now 4 years had previously been married. His mom was adamant about him not having a second wedding to me as grand as his first wife's and was told it would be tacky for guests to have to come to two wedding. He was married for only 5 months- we married a year and half later. As my sister had just gotten married 8 months prior to my wedding, with an elaborate and expensive ceremony we agreed that my husband and I would have a vow renewal with a large reception on our 5 year anniversary so all guests could attend and to not agitate his mother. We had a very simple JP wedding in our yard with only 7 people attending. His mother was furious. I really would like to have a nice celebration with all our friends and family next June. Any particular advice on how to handle this upsetting situation? I don't to upset my mother in law but I feel that just because my husband was married before and it didn't work out doesn't mean we can't celebrate with friends and family. Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure if I understand what the issue is with your mother in law. Why is she adverse to you and your husband renewing your vows?
