From an etiquette standpoint is it acceptable for you to register. People can choose to give, or not give, gifts. You're not demanding that they make a purchase but, if they want to send a gift, they know what you need or want from the registry.I find that most couples family and friends are very happy for them and want to support them, this includes sending gifts to show their esteem.
Sounds like you are not feeling comfortable about it though so be sure to discuss this with your groom completely.
