In Lieu of a Shower

My mom is getting married for a second time. My sister and I are both serving as maids of honor. We are also both students. If we do a dinner with my mom's sisters and nieces in lieu of a shower, are we expected to host/pay?

Dear In Lieu,

If you host an event, you pay. So only host an event that you can afford to actually host. The dinner could be a brunch at someone's home. It doesn't have to be expensive.
