Using children's last name for middle name after getting remarried

I have just returned from my honeymoon and I am in the process of trying to change my name. (such fun!) I was wondering if there is any difference (legally) with using my children's last name as my middle name and my new married name as my last name as opposed to hypenating my name or is it just preference?

(example - Mary Smith Jones vs. Mary Smith-Jones)

I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Before I answer - make note that this is not legal advice. Smile

If you use your children’s last name as a middle name it won’t be part of your legal last name. It won’t even technically be a legal middle name (according to Social Security.) Your legal last name will be Jones; not Smith-Jones.

Check with the SS office to be sure.
