Invitations, yes or no?

My fiance and I are having a small ceremony with dinner afterwards. We are only inviting our immediate families, our 4 children and 2 close friends, for a total of 18 guests. I realize this might be a ridiculous question, but with only 6 invitations needed to be sent out, would a phone call or a hand written note be alright instead?

This is not a silly question. You can invite your guest in any method you choose.
