Are announcements needed for a second wedding?

This is my 2nd marriage and my boyfriends first. We have decided to have a very small garden wedding in our backyard next spring. We have also decided to hand write the invitations. But, my boyfriend doesn't feel it necessary for us to send out announcements to our families. My immediate family agrees. Isn't this a big no-no? Shouldn't announcements be sent out? Please help!!!!!!!!!!
