     teen daughter giving away bride

Help!! My father passed away and I am getting remarried. I was wondering if it would be totally against etiquette for me to ask my teen daughters ages 17 & 14 to give me away???

Dear Derenda,

Absolutely! No one actually gives anyone away these days--here. We support our family and friends in the new life they are entering into. So, anyone, including your children may act in the traditional father role. It is wonderful to include your children though. Because all of you are beginning a new life together.

Many times for second weddings, the bride will walk down the aisle alone and those closest to her will stand and state their "I support...". And, some may skip the entire walk. It is entirely up to you.

Congratulations on your up-coming wedding.

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I am getting married next July...2nd for both of us...my children (24 and 32) and his children ( 32 and 35) will be standing up for us. We will all light the unity candle together. I don't feel at my age (51) that my son should "give me away" (though he might like to Smile). Relax and enjoy your day...do what your heart says to do..not what a book or tradition says!
