My late husband's first wife recently contacted me for a copy of his death certificate. She says that she is remarrying within the Catholic Church and needs a copy of that document in order to do so. I have my doubts, however. They were married for more then a decade, and had two children together. With a copy of his death certificate would she now be able to remarry under the church?

Yes, she is correct. The Catholic church does not recognize a civil divorce and, even though the two of you were married, the Catholic church viewed your late husband and his ex as still married. So, once he died his ex was free to get married again in the Catholic church.
Be a dear and send a copy of the document on to her and wish her well.
