I am a Catholic widow (was married to a Catholic in the Catholic church 30 years ago), and I am now engaged to a widower who is a non-Catholic (Church of Christ). Do I need to remarry in a Catholic church so I can continue to receive the sacraments or can I remarry in a Church of Christ or any other Christian church? He was married the first time by a Justice. He may not want to marry in the Catholic church.

Congratulations on finding love again! Yes, you can still receive the sacraments even if you marry in a non-Catholic church. All you need to do is get dispensation from your priest, in accordance with canon law. This is basically permission for a Catholic to be married to a non-Catholic in a proper Christian ceremony.

There are a few stipulations that must be met, including some pre-marriage counseling sessions. Other than that, your priest can obtain dispensation for you and you can proceed with your wedding plans with the full blessing of the Catholic Church.

God bless you and guide you both in your future life!

What are the stipulations that would have to be met? We are in our 50s and 60s.

As mentioned in the prior post, please visit with your priest to get specific details. Our experts are here to guide you but cannot answer all specific questions.

Good Luck!
