My boyfriend and I have been seriously discussing marriage lately. We are both Roman Catholic. However, he has been married previously, but was married in a Born Again Christian Church (his ex's faith). They were divorced. I have never been married before and would like to get married in and have it recognized by the Catholic Church. Are we able to do that? Or does he have to get an annulment first? Thank you.

Dear KVH,

It depends on the circumstances of the marriage and the divorce. The RCIA for the most part does not recognize the "Sacrament" of marriage outside the Catholic church. The best approach is for you and your intended to make an appointment and talk to your local priest.

Chances are you will be free and clear to marry in the church.

Just a short addendum to Fr. Anderson's good advice. Your fiance will most likely need to fill out the short form of annulment, called "defect of form." This annulment takes only a few days and is necessary for divorced Catholics who have married outside the Church. After your annulment comes through, you will be free to marry in the Church with all the blessings of a full sacramental wedding.

As Fr. Anderson has pointed out, your priest should be able to give you the required form to fill out and advise you on your upcoming wedding. Please consider some pre-marriage counseling, as there may be lingering emotional baggage from your fiance's earlier marriage. May God bless you!
