I did not sever relationship with church; am I free to now take communion? My present spouse is a practicing christian.

We appreciate your longing to receive communion again, but there is not enough information to answer your question. Are you and your present husband Catholic? If not, did you obtain dispensation for your wedding? Is your marriage blessed by the Church?

When an ex-spouse dies then you are free to now marry in the Church. Your marriage is only a civil marriage now. Until those vows are taking in the Church you are still not in full communion with the Church. You need to see someone at your parish to arrange for what we call a "convalidation" -- the validation of a civil marriage in the Church. Just call the parish office and tell them what you are looking for. The secretary will direct you to the right person, usually the priest but sometimes a deacon or a qualified staff person who assists you in the process. The priest or staff person will first explore whether both of you are free now to marry in the Church and guide you through the process.
