my husband and I will be married for 5 years in september and we never had a wedding.

Now that we are financially sound, we are planning a full fledge wedding. I read the etiquette for vow renwal but this is not a second wedding, but our first. some traditions we will not do but some we will. What is the proper etiquette for our situation?"[:(]

Congratulations on five years married. Since you are already married, and weddings are for those not yet married (brides and grooms not husbands and wives), your ceremony would be a vow renewal and you would follow vow renewal etiquette.

Have fun planning your ceremony and party.

Very true. It may not seem as if you had a wedding, because it may not have included a typical ceremony. However, it was a wedding because you are married. There are many types of weddings. Some are just the couple and a judge. This is still a wedding because the end result is marriage.

So, the etiquette is the same. It is your choice to follow it or not. However, please note that I receive many private messages from guests to vow renewals that are treated as weddings. None have been positive.
