I am getting married on the 27th of August for the 2nd time. I have 3 kids from my previous marriage (ages 9-13) who all have the same last name as me (after I divorced, I kept the same last name, which was my married name). My fiance and I have a daughter who has his last name (she is only 2). In speaking with the older kids, they expressed concern that I will not have their last name once I remarry.

My question is, would it be acceptable to keep my current last name (which I have had for 14 years & is my previous husbands name) and hyphenate it with my future husbands last name (which is also my youngest daughter's)?

I got the idea from my fiance's ex-wife (she did this when she remarried for his kid's sake).

P.S. Not that it makes a lot of difference, but everyone gets a long well on all sides.

Hello Kendra:

Hyphenating the two names is a fine idea and something many second time brides do when they have children. As long as your future husband is approving I see no reason why this couldn't work for you.

Be sure this is the name on your marriage license.
