I was first married at a young age in 1985. The divorce lasted until 1994. A few years later, I became involved with and lived with a man that lasted several years and during that time, we had a set of twins together. The relationship was rocky and there were alot of major issues and we ended up breaking up. We have been apart for the last 4 years but began dating again last year. We have never fallen out of love and have now decided to marry at the end of this year (there was a lack of maturity previously on both of our parts and we have just plain grown up over the years!). The twins are now 6 and thrilled about their Mommy & Daddy getting married (in their innocent minds, they do not really realize that we had never married before) amd will be the ringbearer and flowergirl.

Is it appropriate for my Father to give me away a second time? I am not sure he will be at the wedding since he lives across the country, however if etiquette requires it, my Stepdad or older Brother would step in, however due to the course of the relationship and my age (late 30s), I am not even sure I want to do that. What is your opinion or advice....Any guidelines that should be followed?

Dear Giving the Bride Away,

Anyone can walk you down the aisle because this is a wedding. It doesn't matter if it is the tenth wedding. You are beginning a new life. So, you can walk with your father, step-father, brother, sister, or best friend. It really doesn't matter.

We really are trying to get a way from using the phrase, "Giving the bride away." I don't think any of us want to even think about being owned or to be given. It may take a while to change it.

Congratulations!

So etiquette does not require an "escort"? I am pretty content to walk myself....

Absolutely! You can walk all by yourself. We are so fortunate that this is very flexible these days.

Enjoy!
