Vow Renewals: What To Do, What Do Avoid

As far as vow renewals go, you can pretty much do what you want. After all, the event is about expressing your love for each other and your continued commitment, so why not make it unique? Despite this idea, a few general dos and dont’s apply, all of which will keep you on the right track. Check out a few common etiquette tips:

Wearing a White Dress is Okay

We are long past the days of white being reserved for virgin brides. Wear whatever color you like, be it white, black, red, champagne or any other color/hue that speaks to you.  Select an option that suits your personality, figure, vow renewal style, and makes you feel stunning. If you wore a tulle and taffeta dress the first time that made you feel like a marshmallow peep, now is the time to go with something fitted and sophisticated.

You Can Have Bridesmaids and Groomsmen If You Want

Some couples opt for the same people from their original bridal party, which is totally okay. If you have a new set of close friends you want to stand up with you, that’s fine too. It’s also a great idea to have your children participate as your attendants, flower girls, or ring bearers depending on their ages. It’s good etiquette to pay for any dresses and tuxes, however you can go with common colors and let participants select something they already have if you can’t afford new duds. Most women have a nice black cocktail dress or should add one to their closets! A black suit and white dress shirt tends to be a staple in a man’s wardrobe, so just add coordinating ties.

Include the Kiddies

In addition to having your children be part of the wedding party, you can also use this as an opportunity to reinforce just how much you love them. Make family memories by including them in the ceremony with a unity candle, sand ceremony, or other special idea.

Go For Whatever Style of Celebration You Want

Plan the dream reception you both really wanted the first time, but didn’t exactly happen. This time there’s no demanding mother, mother-in-law, or other pushy relatives trying to control everything! Just about any type of reception works for a vow renewal, and you don’t need to do a repeat of your wedding. Do what you want, whether a black tie affair in a ballroom, a intimate family gathering in the backyard, or a romantic destination celebration on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Remember, there’s no limitations, because you’ve already did the wedding thing.

Forget About Gifts

This is a vow renewal, not a wedding. This doesn’t mean you have to put “no gifts” on your invitations, however you shouldn’t expect to receive any. Your gift is friends and family sharing your special day with you!

Keep these tips in mind, and start planning! Most importantly, remember to have fun!
